Everything that you can buy on this site is either handmade itself or enables you in turn to make things by hand. Handmade goods have qualities that cannot be found in mass produced items. Handmade is quirky. Handmade is inherently unique. Handmade is an assertion of individual style.
Handmade is expensive. “Everybody knows that.” Well, we beg to differ. Not only is the cost to the Environment lower, but we believe that handmade items do not necessarily have to be priced according to the hours of love lavished on them. True, some base materials may be highly-priced because the typical hand worker is not able to buy in bulk. Yes, those costs must be passed on to the buyer.
We are proud of our work and believe that our products should reflect that in their pricing — we are not going to give away the fruits of our labours. On the other hand, we believe that our lives are blessed, living as we do in this idyllic setting. Our needs are few, so long as we have a roof over our heads and food upon the table. There are no commerical properties to maintain and no staff to pay other than ourselves — so you will not find us charging the kind of Designer prices you might be asked for in a trendy shop. What you will find here are honest dealings and a fair “island price” – but please remember that many hours of love and care went into whichever Sanday Spinners product you are purchasing. Truthfully, we probably earn less per hour than some sweatshop workers; but we are happy workers and we love what we do. We could price ourselves out of the market and try to earn a sensible hourly rate for our work — but we might not sell very much that way! Worse still, we might become driven by the money; we might push ourselves or cut corners, to turn out more. We might edge our way to mass production.
Well — that would never do. We want you to enjoy a unique product. We want you to be able to give a gift that nobody else has the twin to. We want you to do that affordably.
It is possible that we need our heads seeing to.
There is a logic, however. If you can afford to buy the goods, then we get the money to buy more raw materials, and we can keep on doing what we love to do, and making the things that we love to make. It may break our hearts a little sometimes to part with a lovely object, but there is always the thill of making the next one.
We are here for the thrill.
Why are you here? Why buy handmade? Let Buy Handmade (www.buyhandmade.org) tell you (the emphasis is ours):
Buying Handmade makes for better gift-giving.
The giver of a handmade gift has avoided the parking lots and long lines of the big chain stores in favor of something more meaningful. If the giver has purchased the gift, s/he feels the satisfaction of supporting an artist or crafter directly. The recipient of the handmade gift receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and attention that can be seen and touched. It is the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.
Buying handmade is better for people.
The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.
Buying handmade is better for the environment.
The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production.
So, why not Buy Handmade for your next gift? We will be happy to assist you. And why not take the Handmade Pledge while we have your attention?
Even better, and we may be cutting our own throats here (unless we can sell you some Ashford or KnitPro tools in the process), why not elect to make your own? Give a little piece of yourself this Christmas.
