Dear Knitters

Mr L wishes to acquire some Android App Development Skills. His aim is to produce an app for the software that he writes and maintains. As part of the learning curve he is looking for a simple application to begin with. I suggested a knitting row counter.

As with all of our developments, I have been placed in charge of the User Interface and design elements of this project.

So, knitters, talk to me. If you could have the perfect knitting counter companion on your mobile device and ready at your side when you knit, what features would you like it to have? There will be a free copy of the finished product for anybody who contributes to the development. If you are an iOS person, there’s not a lot I can do about pay back at the moment, but I’d still love to hear your thoughts.

Would an app for crocheters be any different to one for knitters?

Spinners, I shall speak with you for test project #2.

    Good morning Beth,

What a great idea. How about it counting pattern repeats + row within pattern repeat, as well as total rows/rounds.

Could it be given details from tension swatch, then give you your total length knitted?

It’d be cute if it looked like one of those traditional cylindrical ones, you know, like the ones you can use on the end of your knitting needle.

Numbers big enough to see without your reading glasses would be nice too.

Would that lot be too greedy?

    Caroline.

Some good ideas there, Caroline and there are apps out there that already offer some of those features – See County for large digits, and Row Counter Widget offers a plethora of simulated old style knitting row counters.

I had not thought about calculating length knitted – that’s a great idea.

Some thoughts that I had, and have not seen implemented yet include %age completed calculations and voice-activated counters so I don’t have to take my hands off to increment the counter. Imagine a spoken “tink three rows” decrementing the counter automatically for you.

I’m thinking an ability to d/l anything on Rav that has WIP status and linking counters to them so that %age figures can be updated directly could be quite handy.

Then I want an app where I can point my camera at a swatch and it tells me what my gauge is 🙂 I am hopeless at counting swatch stitches. No matter how many guides I use, my eyes skip about and lose their place.

I just left a comment on a previous post about County Plus. There, you put the pattern repeat in and it counts which row you should be on. However, it doesn’t allow for the first repeat having extra rows. For example, my swirl has a 5 row pattern repeat, but the first repeat had 7 rows, so I had to count manually.

I agree that County has some pleasing features but is not the full package. It’s what I shall be using until Mr L comes up with the Sanday Spinners model.

Voice activated with more than one project capabilities. Open app tell it to open project name then be able to say add row at the end of a row or delete row if needed. Maybe make a wake-up comand like xbox does, so if you’re knitting in public and someone talks around you it wont pick it up and start adding rows. It could be as easy as “counter” “add row”, or “counter” “save project”.
