My name is Marja Trimbos. I am from the Netherlands.

After a busy life with now grown-up kids and always more than fulltime jobs, my husband and I (in our fifties) decided for a change in our lives. At the end of 2005 we moved to Sanday, one of the Northern Orkney Isles. He for his job and I to discover how I can participate in the island life.

We were welcomed in a very friendly community, where you don’t have to lock your car, where doors are always open and where you can join in a lot of activities and sports.

People from Sanday appreciate a free way of life combined with care for one another and for all the animals on and around the isle.

In this environment I met people with the same interests in old crafts like spinning, knitting, felting, crocheting and dyeing wool with natural materials. So we started a spinning group, that turned out in Sanday Spinners. Once a week we come together to show our work, to discuss and improve our skills. It is great fun and very satisfying to work with the group of women. Together we add value to a product from the island namely fleeces of the sheep, that graze here. I love to see how we turn the fleeces from Jacob’s, Hebrideans, Shetlanders and Texelers in lovely things like skeins or scarfs, bags, hats, mittens, socks and cardigans.
