Ravelry’s Tour de Fleece 2013

In an attempt to reduce my fleece stash I’ve created a Sanday Group for this year’s Tour de Fleece on Ravelry.

If you have not heard of the Tour de Fleece, it is an annual spin-a-long event that began in 2006. Each year spinners set their own targets for the Tour, or simply spin along every day throughout the Tour de France. There are no penalties or recriminations if you miss any day, but it does give a great impetus to spin and to reduce that fibre stash you have hidden away.

See the two-horned chap, top left? I'll be spinning his fleece.

Our rules are very simple and boil down to: to spin as much yarn as you are able or feel inclined to, whilst the Tour de France is on and enjoy your spinning! You don’t even have to watch the cycling to participate. 🙂

1 – Tell us that you are in. Post to the Ravelry team thread (preferably) or comment here and we will post to Ravelry on your behalf.

2 – At the same time, or later if you cannot decide yet, tell us what your personal aim or challenge is.

e.g Beth is challenging herself  to spin as much of her North Ron roving as she can – she has 1.4 kilos to tackle and turn into a 3 ply Aran yarn  for a sweater she is planning – but it’s not all about quantity. Your challenge might be to learn to spin, or to use a drop spindle if you currently use a wheel, or vice versa.

3 – At the end of the Tour,  post again to tell us what you achieved.

Keep chatting, if you can.

The 2013 Tour starts on 29th June and runs until 21st July. Rest days are built in, just as for the cyclists, and there is a special challenge day.

We will be offering one or more prizes, based on the number of team members and their stated challenges. Just for once, we are allowing ourselves to be eligible – it’s mainly for fun, rather than gain.

The link to our team thread on Ravelry is here – happy spinning everyone! (A reminder here, that you can join as many teams as you like – being part of this team doesn’t stop you from joining others.)

Non-Ravelry people: – signing up to Ravelry is easy and free. Your email address is very safe with them. We have a Ravelry Discussion Group already, and Tour de Fleece chat will also be welcome there. However, Ravelry membership is not a pre-requisite of joining us in our Tour de Fleece efforts – we just believe that you will get more from the event if you join in the social side on Ravelry.

Spinners on Sanday: we will more than likely arrange some spin-together sessions  in addition to the regular Spinning Group meetings.

Maybe next year… my spinning progress is minimal at the moment.
I’m doing Tour de Sock again, which starts tomorrow and goes through 6 rounds of sock knitting and finishes when the Tour de France does. I’m not overly hopeful about my potential for finishing any of those either!

Sorry for the delay in replying – your comment was trashed as spam.

I am parsing your comment as meaning that you want participate in the Tour (as in: “Where do you post that you are in?”

Do you mean “in” as in the event itself, or “in” as in on our team? As above – posting here is sufficient to join us, but posting to our team thread (as detailed above) on Ravelry would be good, if you are registered on Rav.

All the links that you need are in the post above.

It would be good to know your name and a little more about you.
